Hi All,

Been demoing over at NAB for Glidecam and they had some new/prototype gear with them.

First off: the long awaited double Smooth Shooter arm, called the X-10, 10 for the max amount of lbs. it can take. I haven't tried this one myself, but it should offer the same feel as the old(er) Smooth Shooter arm, but twice the boom range. It'll be available as a double arm, but customers who allready have a Smooth Shooter can upgrade to a double action one; you can just bolt it to the existing sprung arm.

Next we have the prototype X-22 arm. It has the same kind of spring placement as the Smooth Shooter (Pro, Baer-Bel), so no more cables and pullies. The resulting smoothness of the arm is phenomenal! At the moment it's rated for cameras upto 22 lbs., but the idea is to have a spring set available so you can swap the springs for heavier/lighter loads. At the moment it weighs as much as the Gold arm, which is quite a lot, and the springs / lifting geometry isn't yet optimised - this arm was designed and put together in just a couple of weeks - but it looks very promessing allready. It beats my own V-25 arm on smoothness. Hopefully they'll have a second - even better - prototype come IBC.

The prototype stage is probably the most clever stage ever made; the 3 major parts are exactly the same and are machined from one single billet of aluminum, that's what I call K.I.S.S. !

Attached are a couple of pics of the new stuff

Couple more pics

As you can see in the pic of the male socket block it doesn't sit at a right angle anymore, so the arm opens up more.

Mmmm... That X10 could come in handy. Was going to speak to David Stevens about the possibilty of a dual smooth shooter arm. Would come in handy for DVX shoots.
Great stuff Pascal.
Cheers,
Marty

Well... because it's so simple, easy machining process, cheap, solid...
